Mike and I have a personal affection for island travel. We still aim to visit the 10 most beautiful islands on every continent within the next 5 years, and the Maldives was one of the most exciting places to check off that list.

The Maldives is a unique country, with nearly all the land spread across atolls with sporadic islands and islets.
These are often set on a coral reef but still surrounded by white-sand, picture-perfect beaches. Most of the best beaches in the Maldives are on private islands, meaning you can only visit them with a reservation at the island’s resort (We’ve noted if the listed is private).
These are the top Maldives beaches for your next tropical vacation.
1. Cocoa Island
Cocoa Island (also known as Makunufushi) is an exceptional beach destination in the Maldives, offering a unique blend of comfort and exoticism.
The private island is ideal for honeymooners and other couples who want to find their dream beach in the Maldives.
Although small – less than 0.5 mile (1km) in length – the powdery white sand at Cocoa Island Beach stretches over 100 feet from the shore, making for a great place to take a stroll, lay by the water, or enjoy a day tour.

Thulusdhoo Island is a vibrant beach destination in the South Ari Atoll, just 1 hour and 30 minutes away by ferry from Malé.

20. Bikini Beach – Rashdoo Island
Bikini Beach’ typically refers to a Maldives Beach (on any island) blocked off to tourists only.
They are typically cleaner and quieter than local beaches, but the official Bikini Beach (which holds the actual name) is on Rashdoo Island, and it’s one of the very few bikini beaches in the Maldives along with Maafushi Island.
There isn’t a ton of snorkeling, but with plenty of palm trees, cafes, restaurants, and resorts, it’s one of the best public beaches in the Maldives.

Kuramathi Maldives is actually across the Rasdhoo Channel from Bikini Beach, but this is where we would personally book because it’s nicer than some of the Rasdhoo Island resorts.
This slice of paradise offers private villas over the water with panoramic views, three primary restaurants, a spa, and water activities such as diving and snorkeling.
21. Milaidhoo Island
Milaidhoo Island is a small circular island (just 500 feet across) in the Maldives. Its beaches have a ton of space and sandy shores surrounding the entire perimeter.
The beaches are truly why people love this island, but the snorkeling is great, too. Travelers often report seeing octopuses, sea turtles, vibrant coral, and sharks. One of the most unique things to do is take a night snorkeling tour to search for manta rays.
The beaches on Milaidhoo Island are quiet and calm too because no water sports are allowed.

23. Huvadhoo Atoll
The Huvadhoo Atoll actually boasts the most islands of any Atoll in the world.
It’s on the southern corner of the region, near Hithadhoo and Gan International Airport, but more importantly, it’s home to a few of the best beaches in the Maldives.
The top places to sunbathe in the Guvadoo Atoll are Sunset Beach (Gadhdhoo), Zero Beach (Gemanafushi), Bikini Beach (Kondey), and Hauddey Beach (Maalimbeyya).

24. Bandos Maldives
Bandos Maldives is a private island in the Maldives built for luxury travelers with a massive 44-acre complex and so much to do.
The space is full of beautiful beaches, multiple restaurants, a private harbor, villas of all types, and even a football field. The circular shape of the island and its narrow shoreline make each beach feel like its own secluded area.

It’s right next to HulhuMalé Island and the airport, so it can get much busier than other private islands. Despite the crowds, it still offers clear waters, great swimming, and pristine beaches.
It also has a ton of entertainment options, so you’ll never run out of things to do here.
Where To Stay Near Kurumba Beach:
Kurumba Maldives Resort is the perfect choice for a short stay or night before heading to one of the other secluded islands.
Situated in North Malé Atoll, it’s only a 10-minute speedboat ride away from Malé. The large resort has over 100 rooms, 2 pools, a luxury spa, restaurants, and customizable excursions.
28. Fihalhohi Island
Fihialhohi Island is a tiny island close to the International Airport and Malé.
But unlike Kuruma Beach, it feels super secluded and has a ring of beautiful beaches surrounding the island.

Guests also love the number of activities available on the island, from beach volleyball to snorkeling trips and a lively beach bar.
Fihalhohi Island is a great option for people on a short trip (think 2-4 days) to the Maldives who don’t want to spend much time getting to the beaches from Malé.

There is no home reef on the island, but the beach is one of our top beaches in the Maldives.
The island’s eastern coast is full of villas with a tiny private beach in front of each accommodation, but the western shore is a huge public beach with soft, beige sand, sunbeds, and water sports like windsurfing, sailing, and wakeboarding.

Best Time To Visit The Maldives
The Maldives is a beautiful winter destination (for us up here in the Northern Hemisphere). The best time to visit the Maldives is between October to April, when the weather is dry and warm, and the ocean is calm enough for snorkeling and other water sports.
Just be prepared for inflated prices and high crowds during peak season. We would book our resorts and tours as soon as possible because some places are at full capacity up to a year in advance, particularly around the holidays.
Worst Time to Visit The Maldives
The worst time to visit the Maldives is from May to October, their monsoon season. You can expect strong winds, heavy rain, and few water-based activities during these months.
However, the beginning of May and October can be hit or miss, so if you find some cheap flights, you could get lucky with beautiful weather for a fraction of the price.
