Unlike Bora Bora, figuring out which area to stay in can actually be tricky on Mo’orea. So this is the guide that shows you exactly which part of the island to pick and the best Moorea hotels on any budget.

The 3 Overwater Bungalow Resorts In Moorea
If you go to Moorea and you don’t stay in an overwater bungalow, did you really go to a French Polynesian island at all?
There are only three overwater bungalow resorts on the island, so this is an easy list to decide from. We’ve stayed at the top two, so you can read our breakdown below.

The Hilton Moorea is our favorite hotel on the island, and we give it a perfect 5/5.
Expect to pay $700–1,000 per night for an overwater bungalow here, depending on the time of year. The Hilton is located in the Piha’ena neighborhood, right between Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, and directly across the road from Mount Rotui.
FOOD & DRINKS
The food and drinks were WAY better than at the Sofitel. There are two restaurants, two bars, and a creperie.
Arii Vahine is the main restaurant, a luxurious open-air dining room with a view of the lagoon, where Mike tried the lamb chops and I had the pesto pasta, both clearly made by a talented chef.
The Rotui Bar & Grill is the more casual, cheaper option if you aren’t willing to spend $50+ a plate.
AQUA-DIVERSITY
Our absolute favorite thing about the Hilton is its aqua-diversity center, Eco Reef Moorea. It’s a non-profit that protects the coral reefs around Moorea, and they even teach you how to plant coral.
PRIVATE BEACH
We also loved the private resort beach. It made it feel more like a secluded, all-inclusive resort, and we occasionally had it all to ourselves. They keep it impeccably clean.
ROOMS
The rooms at Hilton Mo’orea are slightly more up-to-date and comfortable than the Sofitel’s.
We recommend booking the King Panoramic Overwater Bungalow. It’s not the most expensive room, but it has a much better view of the lagoon than the lowest tier of overwater bungalows.

#2 Overwater Bungalow Option

The Sofitel is the other 5-star resort on the island, and it’s a close second for us at 4.5/5.
For about $800 per night you can book an overwater bungalow. The cheapest garden or beachfront villas start around $600 per night. It’s in the Te’avaro neighborhood, connected to Temae Beach, and really close to the ferry port.
Food & Drinks
Truthfully, we were disappointed with the restaurant food and the serving sizes for a 5-star resort. We visited the restaurants many times, and didn’t find anything special. We also ordered room service one night, and foudn the food to be mediocre as well.
To put it into perspective, we paid around $17 for a piece of cheesecake for dessert and it gave Mike and me about a bite and a half each. We weren’t impressed.
SERVICE
The service at the Sofitel was incredible. The staff was highly attentive and made us feel like honored guests at every turn.
There was even an evening turndown service in the room, a welcome bottle of champagne, and staff checking in to make sure we didn’t need anything by the pool. Reviewers constantly mention the reception staff remembering their names, and we had the same experience.
We also loved the complimentary room upgrade; it was completely unexpected.
The Property
Overall, Sofitel has a nicer pool area and better snorkeling than the Hilton. The massive infinity pool overlooks Temae Beach with an exceptional view of Tahiti, and we loved hanging out here every afternoon.
And because the resort sits on a large reef, there’s more marine life right outside your bungalow than you will find almost anywhere on the island.
Rooms
Now we have to be honest because there’s a reason we didn’t give the Sofitel a 5/5 rating..
The rooms felt more run-down than at the Hilton, and if you’ve stayed at ultra-luxurious resorts in the Maldives or Bora Bora, the Sofitel will feel underwhelming.
But for families, the luxury overwater bungalows are quite a bit bigger than the Hilton’s, and there’s a two-bedroom Luxury Villa with a living area and a jacuzzi right on the edge of the lagoon. It’s built for families with kids or friends traveling together.
The rooms weren’t all bad though. We enjoyed many features of our room, and in particular our favorite thing was the window on the floor. You can see fish, sharks, stingray, and other sealife swimming right below you, which was insanely cool.
If they don’t automatically upgrade your room (maybe for a lack of space), the ‘luxury’ bungalows are twice as big as the ‘superior’ overwater bungalows, so it’s worth the extra cost.

#3 Overwater Bungalow Option

If you want an overwater bungalow experience in French Polynesia without the 5-star price tag, Manava Beach Resort is your answer.
The Manava Beach Resort & Spa will likely cost $400–600 per night depending on which bungalow you choose and the season, which is far cheaper than the Hilton or Sofitel.
Although you won’t be staying in a 5-star resort, this 4-star really works its magic. Whether you want to book an excursion, get a massage at the on-site spa, or just lounge on the beach, the Manava delivers.
Best of all, it’s in the Maharepa neighborhood, which is centrally located with plenty of dining and shopping nearby. Maharepa is the neighborhood we would recommend above any others.

After spending more than four months on Mo’orea, here’s the one thing I tell everyone: the island doesn’t reward winging it. The best stays, especially the overwater bungalows, get booked up months in advance, and what’s left for last-minute travelers tends to be overpriced or kind of meh.
There are only three overwater bungalow resorts on the entire island, so if that’s your dream, book early. For the really good Airbnbs, I’d aim for about 3 to 4 months out. That’s enough to lock in solid rates without planning your whole life around it.

Not everyone wants to drop $800 a night on accommodations, and you don’t have to. You can find some awesome resorts on Mo’orea for under $250 a night.

For about $160 per night, stay at the Moorea Beach Lodge in the Ha’apiti neighborhood.
Whether you want to lounge on the gorgeous sandy beach or drink a cocktail at the on-site bar, it’s a great place to soak up laid-back island vibes.
Hop on one of their free bikes or paddle out past the reef with their free kayaks. We loved that they offer so many amenities for free that other resorts charge for.
They serve a delicious breakfast every morning and even let guests use the kitchen for half the day to cook their own food. Now THAT is hospitality.
If you’re after the best value for money on the island, this should be your first choice.

#2 Mid-Range OPtion
Moorea Island Beach Hotel
⭐ 3-Star Hotel |$$
This beachfront, highly-rated 3-star hotel in the Ha’apiti neighborhood will likely run you about $200 per night, but we’ve found deals for less than $150, especially during shoulder season (April to May, September to October).
You’ll get a private, air-conditioned room with free wifi, and a beautiful white sand beach directly in front of the resort. You likely won’t have to leave very often, and many tour companies will pick you up right from the hotel.
💡 Pro Tip: Breakfast is NOT included and usually costs around $25 per person. You don’t have to eat breakfast at the resort. There are far cheaper options nearby.

#3 Mid-Range OPtion
Cook’s Bay Hotel

The Cook’s Bay Hotel is absolutely stunning, but you should read this first..
We spent two nights at Cook’s Bay Hotel and I’d give it 4.1 stars out of 5.
First, let’s cover the good.
The team took one of the most dilapidated buildings on the island (an abandoned old Ibis hotel) and reimagined it into something gorgeous. The rooms are modern and minimalistic, earthy and natural, with wood, gold, and greens.
The amenities impressed us too. They had two bars, borrowable kayaks, a cute shaded sitting area, and you can rent a solar-powered Hello Scoot! motorbike directly from the parking lot, which is our favorite way to get around Moorea.
And the on-site restaurant might have the best setting on the island. It’s on its own little island right in front of the hotel. While we were eating, we saw a sea turtle swimming right in front of us. We put our coffees down and SPRINTED to take a photo.
Now the bad.
The rooms are NOISY. The floors, ceilings, and walls are cement, so you hear everyone around you walk, sneeze, or even speak softly, and the busy road next door doesn’t help. We literally couldn’t nap.
The service was also lackluster, the cancellation policy is inflexible, and at $400+ a night, we just expected more.
So we recommend it, but with reservations. If quiet matters to you, the overwater bungalows at the Manava (sometimes also around $400) are better value.

Contrary to popular belief, Moorea doesn’t HAVE to be expensive if you know where to book. We lived on the island for two months and did it for cheaper than living at home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

The best part is that it’s only 30 meters from the ocean, so the crashing waves will lull you to sleep each night.
You’re close to the best beaches on the island, too, and you’ll have a full kitchen, wifi, a bar, and a foosball table for when it rains (which it does, frequently).
Remember, this is a budget option, so you won’t get the fancy frills, but if you’re okay with that, you’re in for a really awesome time on an otherwise expensive paradise island.

#2 Budget Option

If you’re really looking for a cheap place to stay, this is surely one of the most budget-friendly option on Moorea.
At Fare Om you’ll pay as little as $17 per person for a dorm bed, and breakfast is included, which is a huge deal on an island where food is pricey.
It sits between Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, so you have easy access to both, plus dining, supermarkets, and beaches. And the biggest perk of a hostel is that you’ll meet people from all over the world, which makes Moorea 10x better.

Important Note About Vacation Rentals
A few quick notes about staying in vacation rentals.. we’ve stayed at over 15 different Airbnbs on the island over the past 6 years, and it’s quite difficult to find a holiday home that meets the same standards as the hotels and resorts on the island.
Don’t get me wrong, we have loved many of them, but we’ve found that vacation rentals are always missing at least one thing that hotels often do better with including a pool, being on the beach, air conditioning (super important on Mo’orea), etc.
The 5 Best Areas To Stay In Moorea
We’ve stayed all over the island of Mo’orea and where you stay really shapes your trip.
The best side of the island is the northern shoreline, with its calm lagoons, Opunohu Bay, Cook’s Bay, and most of the top beaches.
About 90% of the resorts, restaurants, and shops are up here, too.
Note: No matter where you stay, you’ll want a car or scooter to get around, unless you decide to stay at your resort of the majority of your trip. There are no Ubers on Moorea, but there are taxis and they are quite pricey.
#1 Area on Mo’orea
Maharepa
Maharepa is the center of it all. If you want a central base, this is your answer. It’s bursting with cafes, cute shops, restaurants, and excursion companies, and it’s close to both Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay.
The Manava Beach Resort is in Maharepa, too.
💡 Pro Tip: Because Maharepa is lively, pick somewhere else if you’re after a calm, quiet stay.

#2 Area on Mo’orea
Temae
Right next to Te’avaro you’ll find Temae. We spent most of our time on Moorea in the Temae neighborhood.
It’s close to the ferry and the airport, and it’s home to one of the top beaches on the island.
It’s just down the road from Maharepa (cafes, shops, supermarkets), and it’s centrally located for exploring both the northern and southern sides. Even so, it’s far enough from the hustle to stay quiet.
💡 Pro Tip: If you golf, Temae is your spot. You’ll be right next to the one and only golf course on the island.

#3 Area on Mo’orea
Tiahura
Tiahura is on the northwest corner of Moorea, and it’s where you’ll find some of the best restaurants and beaches, including Tiahura Beach and Sunset Beach. Grab a cocktail on Sunset Beach and watch the sun dip below the horizon.
You’re also close to so many other things to do, too. The beachfront resorts Moorea Beach Lodge and Moorea Island Beach Hotel are in this area.

#4 Area on Mo’orea
Piha’ena & Cook’s Bay
Piha’ena sits on the edge of Cook’s Bay, on the middle “toe” of Moorea (the island is shaped like a gecko’s foot). Staying here gives you quick access to both bays and adventures like Mount Rotui, Magic Mountain, and the Rotui Juice Factory. It’s well-kept, quiet, and central.
This is also where our #1 overwater bungalow pick, the Hilton Moorea, is located, and the Cook’s Bay Hotel is a short walk from Paopao.

#5 Area on Mo’orea
Te’avaro
Te’avaro is where you’ll find the luxury, including the Sofitel Kia Ora. Lots of swanky houses, centrally located, and steps from Temae Beach and the ferry dock.
It takes about 10 minutes to drive to places like Maharepa or Cook’s Bay from this area.

Don’t Skip These Must-Dos While on Moorea
With the above info, your hotel/resort should be sorted, so now you need to fill the rest of your trip.
These three are the highlights we send everyone to:
- 🐋 Swim with humpback whales
One of the only places on earth you can legally do this. Our recommendation is Moana Tours; we’ve taken their tour three times and saw whales all three times. It was fantastic!
- ⛰️Visit Belvedere Lookout, Magic Mountain, and the Pineapple Farm
The views on Moorea are some of the most epic anywhere in the world. Take a half-day tour with a local guide to find the best spots on the island, including the three I listed above.
- 🤿 Go Snorkeling
In some of the most pristine waters anywhere in the Pacific. The marine life in Mo’orea is unmatched, and I would take as many opportunities to snorkel as I could. I recommend taking a snorkeling tour to find the best reefs and spots around the island. This is the tour I would recommend in a heartbeat.

Is Moorea Safe For Tourists?
Above all, yes.
Moorea is a small island off Tahiti, part of French Polynesia, and it follows laws set by the French and Polynesian governments. Like anywhere, be aware of your surroundings and don’t flaunt fancy accessories outside the resorts, but your chance of being pickpocketed or robbed is very, VERY slim.
The thing you should actually worry about is the ocean. Riptides are common, and injuries or worse can happen if you’re not careful. Never swim or snorkel alone, and learn the warning signs of a riptide before you go.
Moorea Hotel FAQs
What side of Moorea is best to stay on? The northern shoreline, hands down. There you’ll find calm lagoons, Opunohu Bay, Cook’s Bay, the best beaches, and 90% of the resorts, restaurants, and shops. For the center of it all, book the Hilton in the Piha’ena/Maharepa area. For something more secluded, go with Tiahura.
How many days should I stay in Moorea? We recommend at least 7 days. That’s enough to relax at your resort and still see the island’s best highlights.
Sofitel or Hilton Moorea? Both are incredible, but we’d choose the Hilton. The Hilton wins on location, food, amenities, and more up-to-date rooms. The Sofitel edges it on service and is the better pick for families thanks to its bigger villas.
Does Cook’s Bay Hotel have overwater bungalows? No. It has renovated rooms with terraces and sea views. The only overwater bungalows on Moorea are at the Hilton, the Sofitel, and the Manava Beach Resort.
Things To Pack/Buy For Moorea
Along with obvious things to pack for Moorea (clothes, shoes, etc), here are some things you should remember to bring:
- Non-Toxic Bug Spray – There is an insanely large amount of mosquitos on Moorea. Do yourself a favor and bring bug spray with you.
- Non-Toxic Sunscreen – The sun is intense in French Polynesia; don’t forget to pack plenty of sunscreen.
- Lightweight Raincoat – We were expecting a lot of rain during our trip and we were right! It rains about once per day for about an hour. Bring a coat so that the rain doesn’t hold you back.
