5 Lesser-Known Countries For Budget Travelers
• Originally broadcast via email on December 30, 2024 •
“I wish I could travel more, but I just don’t have the money.”
We hear this so often, but the good news is that travel doesn’t always have to come with a hefty price tag.
During our travels, we typically spend less than we would if we were renting a place in most US locations.
I know I recently sent out a newsletter about the most underrated countries around the world,
..but I wanted to do a BUDGET version of that list.
There are incredible destinations around the world where your budget can go SO much further than you ever expected.
I’m sure everyone knows about the affordability of Thailand, Vietnam, Bali (Indonesia), etc.
So I wanted to shed light on other lesser-known destinations that are just as awesome:
1. Kyrgyzstan
This is hands-down one of our favorite places on Earth; we’ve been twice, once in summer and again in winter, and loved it both times.
In summer, we went on a multi-day trek through the mountains; fewer people hike these trails each year than summit Everest. Which is wild considering the incredible views we saw along the way.
In winter, we tried all sorts of fun things like winter kayaking, skiing and snowboarding (their ski lift tickets are like $8 a day!), hiking, hot springs, and even watched a nomadic family build a yurt.
We also had the chance to experience an at-home Kyrgyz concert and cultural dance; it was unforgettable.
Kyrgyzstan is perfect for nature lovers, with its massive mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and yurt stays that let you dive right into the nomadic culture.
It’s also SUPER affordable, which makes it even better!
2. Kazakhstan
The land of endless steppes and modern cities like Almaty offers a fascinating blend of nature and culture.
You can hike the jaw-dropping Charyn Canyon, often compared to the Grand Canyon, or explore the surreal sand dunes of Altyn-Emel National Park.
Soak in the vibrant culture of Almaty with its tree-lined streets and cozy cafes, or check out the futuristic architecture in Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana), where every building looks like it’s from a sci-fi movie…
…all without breaking the bank!
We haven’t made it to Kazakhstan yet, but it’s definitely high on our list. The mix of epic landscapes, unique experiences, and affordable prices makes this a destination we can’t wait to explore.
3. North Macedonia
With its charming capital Skopje and the stunning Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia is a dream for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
Skopje’s mix of ancient ruins, quirky statues, and Ottoman-era architecture is fascinating to explore, while Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, offers crystal-clear water, picturesque villages, and hiking trails.
The food there is incredible, too. Think hearty Balkan dishes, fresh local produce, and plenty of savory pastries.
North Macedonia is in the Balkans, which means it’s surprisingly easy to get to from the USA. It’s also a great base for exploring nearby countries like Albania, Kosovo, and Greece.
4. Albania
Albania’s Riviera has turquoise waters and rugged coastlines that rival those of Greece, but it’s much less crowded and more affordable.
It’s a hidden gem in Europe where your money stretches so much further.
But Albania isn’t just about its beaches; the mountains here are absolutely stunning. The Albanian Alps, also known as the Accursed Mountains, offer some of the most dramatic and unspoiled landscapes in Europe.
If you’re into hiking, the Valbona to Theth trail is legendary, with breathtaking views, alpine villages, and a sense of peaceful remoteness.
Whether you’re exploring the mountains or relaxing on the coast, Albania delivers adventure and beauty without breaking the bank.
5. Romania
Castles, medieval towns, and the mysterious allure of Transylvania, Romania has it all.
Bran Castle, often linked to the Dracula legend, is just the beginning. The cobblestone streets of cities like Brașov and Sibiu are like stepping back in time, with charming squares, Gothic architecture, and a fairytale vibe that feels SO magical.
Romania is also home to some of Europe’s most scenic (and affordable) road trips through the Carpathian Mountains.
The Transfăgărășan Highway, dubbed “the best road in the world” by Top Gear, offers jaw-dropping views, hairpin turns, and epic stops like Balea Lake.
The Retezat National Park, part of the Carpathians, is a hiker’s paradise with glacial lakes and untouched wilderness.
Whether you’re exploring its rich history or its breathtaking landscapes, Romania combines adventure, culture, and budget-friendly travel in one unforgettable package.
